AND THE WINNER IS …… ANXIETY, EVERY TIME

Whenever I check the stats for what people search for when looking for a therapist, Anxiety is always there at the top of the pile. Even before the extraordinary situation created by Covid-19, it was always Number One, so now it has a clear head and shoulders lead over Stress, Trauma, relationship problems and so on. Why?

Well, for one thing it is a general term that embraces various issues. It’s a word that is thrown around lightly, it’s an “alright” thing to have, it’s accepted and (sort of) understood.

The NHS defines anxiety as “a state of unease, such as worry or fear,  that may be mild or severe, ”
It is perfectly normal – and healthy – to feel anxious at certain times. This goes back to the old “fight or flight” syndrome of stone-age man. When coming face-to-face with a hungry lion, the man had to make a choice – stay and fight the beast, or run. The chemical process triggered in the body in the split seconds it took him to make his decision has been clearly identified, and involves the amygdala, at the back of the brain. At the first sign of danger, it releases adrenalin, a chemical that puts certain systems on high alert. It also shuts down systems that are not so important: stone age man would not have been aware of being hungry or wanting to have a pee when faced with a hungry lion. All resources are pumped to the brain, the muscles, the heart and the senses.
Once the crisis is over – when stone-age man has killed the lion or escaped from its clutches, the flow of adrenalin is stopped, and the systems return to normal.
A touch of adrenalin is a good thing – it gives us that “edge” before we make a presentation, or have an interview or take a driving test. But prolonged adrenalin is like driving a car with the choke out all the time (those of you too young to remember cars with chokes, go Google it!). There is too much “juice” getting in to the system, it’s working on overdrive, and that is not healthy.
Too much adrenalin in a system is like too much petrol in an engine – it floods!

There are many factors in our normal everyday life that may cause anxiety – work, financial worries, relationship, kids, moving house, death of a loved one  to name but a few. Add into the mix the shadow of Covid-19 and the many implications of that, and there is a perfect storm. People are either rushed off their feet at work on the frontline, in highly-stressed situations, or are stuck at home unable to work, with time and space to think about all the things that might go wrong.
The news is full of horror stories, numbers of death and people suffering: the levels of fear and panic are stirred up constantly.

In all of my work, I seek to trace back the real, underlying root cause of an issue and resolve it at source. A client’s irrational, ongoing anxiety may be the result of an incident or a trauma in their early childhood – or perhaps even much earlier, in a previous life (that is far more common than you may think). It may stem from a set of circumstances that, to the client at least, cannot be changed, leaving him or her powerless.

In exploring the client’s perspective of the situation and the wider world, i can help the client to uncover the  cause of the anxiety if it is a “this lifetime” root.
This may be done by creating a safe space for the client to “download” all the “stuff” that has been building up inside – all the “what if …?” scenarios, the fears, the insecurities and so on.
Or, perhaps some hypnotherapy and past life regression may be more effective, to explore the unconscious levels of the mind and see what is being held there.

Long-term anxiety can be debilitating and exhausting, and can have a serious impact on someone’s quality of life and well-being.
Uncovering the real underlying root cause and resolving the issue at source allows that person to get on with his or her life.

COPING IN LOCKDOWN – AND COMING OUT OF LOCKDOWN

These past few months have been challenging at every level, in so many ways.
The usual routine has been turned on its head, individuals and families have had to adapt to completely new ways of co-existing. While for some this has been a time to press the “pause” button and think about a different way of living and working in the future, for others it has been highly stressful.

Couples who normally had distractions of work, gym, hobbies, nights out with the boys / girls, suddenly find themselves spending far more time together, with no distractions. If there were little cracks in the relationship, Lockdown could well have ripped them wide open. If there were issues that had been swept under the carpet – the carpet was whipped away, leave bare floorboards and piles of “stuff” to be dealt with. With nowhere to hide, couples had a choice – retreat to their respective corners and draw a line to divide them, or try and resolve the various issues that came to the surface. Sadly, for some, it resulted in abuse too: calls to the various emergency help lines have soared during this period.

For some people, then, Lockdown has been a time of being locked in with someone they would not choose to spend so much time with.
For others, it has been a time of being locked in with no access to the one person they would want to be with, including those having affairs.

And for yet others, it has meant being lonely as well as alone. Many people who live on their own rely on their jobs or their keep-fit classes or similar regular activities to provide the social interaction we all need. When confined to their homes – often small flats with little or no green space around – their four walls can seem like a prison.    Anxiety, fed by news reports on the TV and in  newspapers, can rise to panic proportions. The individual can be knocked off balance and, in that state, fear can take over. Deprived of human interaction, such people can easily slide into the big black hole of depression, hiding away as the world seems an ever-darker, more dangerous place.

For all of these people – the couples and the singles – the return to whatever may pass for normality is going to be a rocky road. It is not possible to “just go back the way it was” because too much water has passed under the proverbial bridge. It can need time and support to identify the issues and deal with them in a calm, logical, constructive way.

If you feel that I can help you with any of that, give me a call – my home number is 01444 459 433 and my mobile is 07597 020 512.

Case study: why would her children being sick cause such a reaction?

I just love past life regression work. The more I study and research and work with this fascinating subject, the more I realise that our past lives hold the key to so many areas of our current lives.

I recently worked with a lady who has two young children. She is happily married, and a loving, caring mother. Her issue was her “over-the-top” reaction when one of her children was physically sick. This went beyond natural concern into what she described as a phobia.

In a deep state of relaxation she went back to a life where she was a girl of about 10 or 11, she didn’t really know, almost the eldest of a large number of brothers and sisters living in squalor in one dark, dingy room in what seemed to be a large town. There were certainly “lots of other buildings” around. This little girl didn’t know where her parents were, her main concern every day was begging or stealing enough food to feed her siblings.

Having established the basic scenario – she had no idea where she was, what year it was, who was on the throne (what did any of that have to do with the life of a struggling peasant girl?), I moved her on to the time when the incident happened that had to do with sickness.

The little girl moved on only a year or so, and was totally distraught. All her siblings were really ill – they had fever, they were vomiting, they were dying. It seemed it wasn’t just her family – everyone was ill, everyone was dying. There were no doctors, they had all gone. The little girl felt helpless, she didn’t know what to do, she couldn’t stop her brothers and sisters dying in this pathetic one room, with the floor no doubt awash with vomit as well as dirt and despair.

The little girl was sobbing, she was having problems breathing, she was desperately upset. We had clearly found the source of the trauma, so I moved her on a few more years. She was the only one of the children to survive, and we caught up with her living in a cottage in the country with a family “but not my family”. She married and had three daughters, all of whom were fit and healthy, and she was a loving, caring mother.

I moved her on to the time of her death, and helped her pass over with lots of love, compassion and reassurance that there was nothing she could have done to help her siblings, she did all she could, it wasn’t her fault and so on. She found release from the trauma she had carried in that lifetime, and passed with a beautiful smile on her face.

Then I worked on the “now” person, and released the negative strands that she had brought forward from that lifetime, reinforcing the positive, loving aspects of her being and giving strong, positive suggestions too.

Result – one amazed but very happy client who (despite the little pile of soggy tissues) said she felt “lighter”, “clearer”, “happier” – and that was just on the day!

All in a day’s work – is it any wonder I just love what I do?

Getting the Message

Getting the message – it’s a huge topic. Where to start?

As I sat and waited for all the many random thoughts pinging around my head to get into some sort of order and start dripping down the filter into my consciousness – or in this case, into my fingers and onto the computer screen, I was struck by the music I was listening to (vintage Roy Orbison, actually). The full sound came from the main speaker, and then a beautiful section came from the speaker behind my left ear, followed by the answering section from behind my right ear.

And somehow, that clicked. It’s not only what The Big O was singing that mattered, but what I was hearing – and how I interpreted that – which affected my overall experience.

There’s another article to be written about information overload (note to self!) – but here I want to focus on the messages we receive from our parents, teachers and relations in our early years. Do those adults understand, I wonder, the huge effect their words can have on young, sensitive children?

I may be repeating this story, but it shocked me so much it bears telling again. I was in a local convenience store a while back, and a young boy aged around 6 or 7 was looking for a newspaper. The papers were not in a rack, but spread on a shelf almost at floor level, with a large pillar making things even more awkward (clearly newspapers were not a top seller!). As the boy picked up his paper and turned away, so some magazines dropped from the next shelf up. He started to put the magazines back, which was very good of him – but I was horrified to hear what he was saying to himself as he did it:

“You’re so clumsy, you’re always dropping things.”

“Stupid boy, why aren’t you more careful?”

“You can never do things right, can you?”

As I helped him to pick up the magazines that had fallen off the shelf, he looked at me as if he expected another verbal lashing. Instead, I smiled and assured him that everything was fine, it was only a few magazines, he was being very nice by putting them back, no harm was done. He looked confused, then embarrassed, as he left to pay for his paper.

I was left wondering just who had so effectively programmed this young boy that he repeated the phrases parrot-fashion in such a situation. Did they realise the damage they had done? That the boy would carry that programming with him as he grew up?

I have worked with a number of clients recently affected by getting the wrong message – or by being harshly programmed, like this little boy. The teacher who smirks, “well, you’ll never get very far at this rate,” or something similar. The father who never told his daughter she was pretty, and only praised her when she got top grades at school. The mother who told her daughter that men were evil and sex was a painful, horrible chore.  All lay the foundations for problems in the future as the child grows up and faces the dilemma of his / her reality and what he / she has been told.

By going back and finding out where those messages came from, and dealing with them at source, it is possible to free the client from those negative chains and allow them to move forward with a new set of messages that are far more relevant to their particular lives. It can be an emotional, tearful, journey – but getting rid of those outdated, non-serving messages is also hugely empowering.

New success stories

It’s always appreciated when clients take the time and effort to let me know how things are going, either after a session or once the work has finished – the actual healing continues way after the final session, and can take weeks or even months to fully process and settle.

This lovely card arrived in the post a while ago – inside the client had written:
“I saw this card in the local shop and thought of you …. what you have achieved in a short time is amazing ….”

Just a couple of weeks ago a lady sent me a long email the day after a session.
She wrote:  “Thank you so much for our session and the spirit release yesterday … I have finally managed to shed some of the armour I had built up over the years and which eventually had desensitised me ……”

And a client I worked with over a period of several months wrote me a letter (how delightfully old-fashioned is that!) which said:

I’m very pleased to write on behalf of Judy Sharp, who I met in October 2017.

As soon as I spoke to her on the phone I realized she grasped the problems, which were complex and longstanding.

Within 3 weeks of starting therapy there had been a marked improvement in my physical symptoms and my confidence. Over the next four months the improvements continued and I was able to cope with situations and events that had previously been impossible.

Her hypnotherapy has turned my life around and I still put her advice and teaching into practice – and it works.

I feel a new person and this is obvious to friends and family who see a great change for the better.

I have no hesitation in recommending Judy as a first class hypnotherapist and counsellor.

Irrational Fears and Phobias

When I talk about past life regression – which I do, given half a chance – some people’s eyes glaze over, I can almost see their ears closing. Others, fortunately, are much more open to the idea that a wide range of issues in this life may, in fact, have their root cause in a past life.

Irrational fears and phobias are typical examples – and I have had clients come to me with a whole range of phobias! Common ones include fear of flying, heights, water, crowds, dogs and, of course, spiders. Less common but still not unusual are fear of crossing bridges, any form of surgery or needles, having something around the neck and being alone in the dark.

Usually, people find a way of coping with these fears until such time as they interfere with life so much that something has to be done. I worked with a lady last year who had just become a grandmother, and was overjoyed. Unfortunately, her new grandson was on the other side of the world, and she had a severe fear of flying. If she wanted to see her grandson, she would have to overcome that phobia!
The interesting thing about fear of flying is that there are variations on the theme: for some it is take-off and landing, while for others it is not being in control. For this particular client, it was being in an enclosed space and not being able to get out, a sense of being trapped.

The answer was found, as is so often the case, in a past life. In this instance, it was back in the 1600s when the client was a man in India. His life unfolded as a tale of riches to rags to riches as he lost his rich wife (and her dowry), but managed to marry off his eldest daughter to a wealthy merchant. The  man got caught up in an earthquake in Calcutta, and was trapped under the rubble, unable to get out. He was not found, and died there in the rubble.
The negative emotions were released and healed, and the client came back to full consciousness feeling much lighter.

About a month later I received an email from her, to say that she had taken a short flight  “to make sure it worked” and that she had just returned from that all-important first visit to her grandson on the other side of the world: how lovely is that!

This lady had never done any past life work before, but she was open to the idea, and it certainly worked for her! It could work for you too – if you have an irrational fear or phobia that is holding you back from living life to the full, give me a call on 07597 020 512. DUMP THAT EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE – YOU’LL BE SO GLAD YOU DID!

LIGHTER, BRIGHTER AND MORE POSITIVE – HOW GOOD IS THAT!

We start collecting baggage from an early age, taking on board “stuff” from parents, teachers, lovers, bosses … it piles up, weighing us down, stifling our creativity, trapping our true selves inside cages made of guilt, self-doubt, fear and pain.

Just imagine how much lighter, brighter and more enjoyable life could be if all that baggage could be left behind!

That’s what I help clients to do, and it’s fabulous to see the transformation, to see them come alive as they re-discover who they really are.

One lady, in a deep state of relaxation, went back to the time just after she was born. The very first words this little baby heard her father say were “I didn’t want a girl, I wanted a boy.” She carried that weight throughout her life, until we let it go.

Other clients know that they were not wanted, they were “accidents” – and sometimes their parents tell the child so in no uncertain terms as it grows up. Imagine the weight of that!

Some clients share stories of being abused by parents or relations. Often they carry the shame, guilt, confusion and anger as excess weight or as physical issues. And often they have never been able to talk about it freely. The process of releasing all of that in safe surroundings is hugely cathartic, leaving people lighter, brighter, more confident in themselves, and able to move on with a fresh perspective.

If you know someone who might benefit from letting go of some emotional baggage, please pass on my numbers – 01444 459 433 or 07597 020 512. I’m always happy to have a chat, completely free of charge of course, and with no commitment.

Overwhelm … Anxiety … Emotional Trauma

One way or another, these three symptoms feature high with a majority of people who come to see me. It may be one particular event, or an issue that has been going on for years and has reached that point where it just has to be dealt with. Maybe it’s that sense of “something’s come over me” or “I’m not myself” or “I want my old self back” … a phobia that’s holding them back …
My blend of hypnotherapy, regression and other processes has proved very effective in dealing with these kinds of challenges. I always aim to trace back the real underlying root cause of the issue, whatever it may be, and to resolve it at source. That may mean, for instance, locating and releasing old traumas and emotions that have been weighing the client down. It may mean exploring a past life (yes, really) … the work is “out there”, it’s weird – but it works.
If you know someone who might benefit from “lightening the load” emotionally speaking, give them my numbers. I’m always happy to have a chat: 01444 459 433 or 07597 020 512.

LOST SOMETHING? FROM BITCOIN CODES TO LIBIDO – LET ME HELP YOU FIND IT – IT’S THERE IN YOUR UNCONSCIOUS SOMEWHERE!

We all lose things. Sometimes we need help to find them again, especially if they are a bit more complicated than an umbrella or a pair of gloves.

I help clients find things they have lost by searching in their unconscious.
It’s a matter of tracking back to find the real root cause, and resolving it at source.
That releases the trauma and allows the client to move on, free to enjoy life to the full.

What sort of things have I helped people to find?

Libido, for instance. We found that squashed down and crushed in a past life, and very painful it was too.

Freedom to drive over bridges. That went back to the 1500s and a nasty fall off the castle battlements.

Freedom from a gambling addiction: that was what I call a spirit “passenger” making its influence felt.

There was even a newspaper headline recently saying that Bitcoin investors were turning to hypnosis to try and remember their blockchain codes …. well, if it works for that, it can work for you, too, whatever you’re trying to find!

If you know someone who would benefit from finding something, do give them my numbers:  01444 459 433 or 07597 020 512: I’m always happy to have a chat. Or point them to my website:  www.effective-hypnotherapy.co.uk .

EMOTIONAL RUBBISH CLEARANCE SERVICE

We all have a large rubbish bin full of emotional baggage: stuff we should have got rid of years ago. But we become attached to it, like an old pair of slippers or a baggy sweater, and somehow we never get around to letting it go …

Trouble is, it mounts up and mounts up in the system, at one level or another, and eventually it all becomes too much. “Overwhelm” is something I deal with frequently with clients who are crumbling under the weight of accumulated emotional baggage. If we haven’t bagged up and got rid of emotional traumas, we keep tripping over them, they get in the way, they stop us from moving forward.

In my experience, the only way to truly clear out all of this type of rubbish is to trace it back to the real underlying emotional root cause, and to resolve it at source. The basis of my work is hypnotherapy as a way of accessing the unconscious, where most of the trauma (in all its forms) is stored. I use a number of techniques and processes in my “rubbish clearance service” – releasing traumas from this life; exploring possible traumas in past lives and so on – all aimed at getting rid of that emotional baggage once and for all. Clients find emotional freedom; they reclaim their personal power; they are able to move on with their lives free from fears, phobias, anxiety and that sense of overwhelm. Amazing what a good clear-out can do!

If you – or someone you know – could benefit from my special emotional rubbish clearance service, my numbers are 01444 459 433 or 07597 020 512: I’m always happy to have a chat (totally confidential, totally free of charge).
