I don’t know about you, but that week between Christmas and New Year is “down time” for me. I like to keep it as quiet as I possibly can, and I catch up with movies, music and books that I have been promising myself all year.

It’s also a time to do some housekeeping on the computer – sorting through the lists of old emails, deleting those that are no longer needed, archiving those that have to be kept, but away from the main day-to-day activity; generally making sure that everything is in order and there is no unwanted rubbish around.

Going through that process reminded me just how much it is like the work I do with clients who are carrying around out-of-date instructions or messages that are getting in the way of their lives. You know the sort of thing – “you’re a girl, you just have to get married and have children, you don’t need a career.”  Or “you’re no good at school, how do you expect to make your way in the world?” Or perhaps “well, you know, we always wanted another son, it was a great disappointment that you were a girl.” Maybe something like, “people like us don’t do things like that.”  Or the old favourite, “money is the root of all evil, it doesn’t bring anything but trouble.”

I have helped clients to go look at the issues holding them back and discover the messages that were, at an unconscious level, still controlling them. It was as if the tape was still playing, on and on, even though the message had long outlived its usefulness (if it ever had one!). When we have found it, we do exactly what I did on my computer – Delete! And then empty the Trash, just for good measure!

Whereas I am more than happy to free up space on my computer, Nature doesn’t like a vacuum, so the space that was taken up with outdated messages is cleaned out and then filled with new, positive, relevant messages that are generally along the lines of “I have all the resources I need to complete the work I need to do.” Or maybe “I can achieve anything I put my mind to, and I decide here and now to put my mind to this project.”  You get the idea.

The wonderful thing – one of the wonderful things – about hypnotherapy and working with the unconscious – is that anything and everything is possible. Clearing out the old and bringing in the new is just one of them!
